EAST PALESTINE–County youth joined Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services along with John and Daryl Hersh of Ozer Ministries Saturday for the 6th Annual Artisans Against Domestic Violence Art Exhibit.
Both the East Liverpool and Columbiana Way Station encouraged the young girls involved with Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) to participate and increase awareness of domestic violence.
GLOW consists of coordinating young women with mentors and guidance through fellowship. GLOW hosts young women who talk and discuss multiple topics while enjoying crafts, group games, photo fun and manicures.
“We are teaching those young ladies so many different things including body image, great self-talk. But, one of the things we also like to talk on is the red flags and the green flags in relationships,” Way Station Director Chaney Nezbeth explained.
Mark Blackburn Husband of the East Liverpool Way Station Director, values the connection built between community organizations and Ozer Ministries.
“It gets the word out. The awareness out. The abuse that most people don’t see or hear about,” he said.
Hannah Shaffer of East Liverpool attended another event, motivating her to participate in the art exhibit.
“Just hearing the testimonies of the ladies, it’s just really touched me and made me realize it is real, very real,” Shaffer said.
Shaffer’s aunt, Cindy Davie, described seeing her niece’s’ artwork as a “punch in the gut.”
Davie is amazed how much insight her young niece had about domestic violence.
According to Blackburn this is the third year GLOW has participated in the exhibit.
“We try and help the girls build up their self-esteem and to plan for their future and also learn to be a part of their community and give back to their community,” Director of the East Liverpool Way Station Tammy Blackburn said.
